Sažetak
In 1841 Edgar Allan Poe wrote “The Murders in the Rue Morgue”, generally considered the first detective story which would, along with two of his other short stories “The Mystery of Marie Rogêt” (1842) and “The Purloined Letter” (1844) lay down the foundation for detective genre as a whole. Some thirty years later – allowing for the spread of literary influence – detective stories began to appear on Russian literary scene as well. Among them were those written by Aleksandr Andreevich Shkliarevskii often called “the father of Russian detective fiction”. This presentation offers a comparative analysis of short stories by the mentioned “fathers”. More precisely, it poses questions stemming from the similarities and differences between the concepts they use, the methods employed by their detectives and their attitude towards “fair play rule”. The dominant trends in Russian literature of that time – realism and conviction about the writer's social responsibility – as well as the social changes under Alexander II make up a significantly different background to that of American romanticism and thus could explain the emphasis on social conditionality of the crime in Shkliarevskii’s fiction rather than on “ratiocination”.
