Sažetak
Introduction: Prior to ovulation dried women saliva forms a ferning pattern and this effect is used for self-monitoring fertile window. Aim: The aim is to investigate does physiological stimulation of saliva flow rate have an impact on forming salivary ferning pattern and could ferning be evident in male saliva. Materials and methods: 81, healthy students of both sexes participated in this study. For saliva sampling of unstimulated and stimulated saliva, we used collecting cups and paraffin wax (Saliva- check Buffer, CG, Tokyo, Japan). Students were asked to spit all pooled saliva into cups for five minutes. Stimulation was achieved from chewing wax 30-second before collecting. 120 minutes after stimulation, the second unstimulated sample was collected. One drop of collected saliva was put on a microscope slide and air- dried. Slides were evaluated under a light microscope at 40x magnification and if there was a ferning pattern labeled positive. The flow rate of all samples was determined gravimetrically. Results: A ferning pattern was evident in unstimulated saliva in both sexes in 73 % of the first unstimulated samples. 52% of stimulated saliva had evidence of crystallization but not ferning patterns. 67% of samples from a second unstimulated sample from students with the first ferning sample showed ferning. Conclusion: Ferning patterns were evident in both sexes in unstimulated samples. The pattern was full only in female students near ovulation. Salivary flow stimulation had an impact on forming ferning patterns and was not evident in stimulated saliva.
