Sažetak
The biggest impact on the natural gas market will be the provision of cost-effective flexibility for the power sector with a high share of intermittent renewables. For power systems balancing natural gas-fired power plants with the application of CCS will certainly play an important role in decarbonizing the sector. The second impact will be the possibility of developing infrastructure for CO2 transport and storage. The development of infrastructure for hydrogen production, storage, and transport, along with the cost and efficiency of hydrogen use in transportation will certainly determine the large share of the gas market.Natural gas consumption in building sector is expected to be switched with biogas and biomass, using existing infrastructure. Hydrogen is not expected to be implemented in this sector before 2040 (general electrification & heat pumps). The best prospects for natural gas are expected in the transportation sector, where CNG demand is expected to increase in the short term and LNG demand is expected to increase in the long term. The role of gas in industry and in the energy, transformations will depend on the implementation of CCUS and the increase of energy efficiency. The volatility of gas prices increases uncertainty of natural gas as a transitional energy source. Decarbonization of the natural gas system will therefore be even more challenging under these market conditions.
