Sažetak
Under the impact of the global COVID-19 health crisis a small but vocal community of temporary residents has emerged in Croatia commonly referred to as digital nomads. Supported by intense social media activity it has since attracted others to follow and join the community at the coastal regions and cities, as well as the capital Zagreb. New policy measures were laid out swiftly by the Croatian government to facilitate their sojourn and to put Croatia on the map as prime destination for digital nomads. Meanwhile, public / private partnerships, business and civic initiatives are developing offers to cater to these foreign residents, mostly early career remote workers engaged in a mobile lifestyle coined as “serious leisure” (B. Yuen Thompson 2018). Our contribution sketches the emergence of a digital nomad community and an industry catering to this target group in Croatia. Based on semi-structured interviews with public administration officials, representatives of local tourist agencies and businesses, and with digital nomads, and on social media discourse analysis, we describe an ecosystem in the making, its practices, aspirations, and we question its potential impacts on local contexts.
