Sažetak
Remitting does not take place out of context ; it is embedded in a social field (Bourdieu) or configuration (Elias), in which interactions between “the established and the outsider” (Elias/Scottson) unfold. I suggest looking at remitting as an interactive, dynamic process between a returning migrant and local recipients. In order to gain a better understanding of the relevance of local contexts conditioning the social processes and dynamics of remitting, I am drawing on qualitative interviews with migrants, who have returned from abroad in various stages of Croatia´s transition from a republic within a socialist federal system to an independent state. In what ways have they participated in and contributed to local processes of social transformation, the developping of a democratic and pluralistic society, which has joined the European Union in 2013 as its (then) 28th member state? In experiential accounts of returning, re- embedding (Pfaff-Czarnecka) and participating, as well as in „matching interviews“ with their local counterparts, I am tracing the chances and obstacles returnees meet when attempting to remit in local contexts, be it professional / work environments, civil initiatives, or private households.
