Sažetak
The article uses the resources of the capability approach, combined with a model of public justification not yet employed in the capabilities debate, in order to trace an appropriate response to basic challenges in psychiatry. These are the challenges represented by the antipsychiatry thesis that mental illness is a myth (Szasz) and the neurodiversity affirmation that, at least, some traditionally considered mental illnesses are cases of mere diversity (Jaarsma & ; Welin). The question is central, because in the history of psychiatry there have been violations of human rights based on wrong definitions of mental disabilities and successive wrong medicalization. The problem is to find a way of determining evaluative standards in psychiatry that warrants objectivity and protects from repression, and imposition of values and neglect of pluralism. At the same time, it is important not to omit medicalization when it is needed.
