Sažetak
The text points to the formation of the corporate group Croats during the second half of the 14th century, the importance of this process for identification of the social group with the political, the transfer of this identification to the abstract legal entity (state) and its simultaneous “territorialisation”. On one hand, this is related to the implementation of the late medieval political theory in the practices of central government and its influence on the formation of society, and on the other, to theoretical models dealing with the development of the late medieval state. The latter - as far as this is possible, given that the late medieval society was not its primary focus - employs aspects of Michael Mann’s model of “state power.” By providing a number of examples for the growth of the Corporate group of Croats, enhanced both by ideas of rulers from above and the construction of society from below, most clearly visible in the Croatian customs, supposedly historical values from the time of King Zvonimir, the paper points to the elite of the Kingdom of Croatia (previously gathered around the counts of Bribir and its status as the centre of corporatism. The formation of the corporate Croats group and its subsequent identification with a mostly defined territory indicates a key stage in the emergence of the pre-modern (impermanent) Croatian nation.
