Sažetak
Just wait until they all start to sing! I heard this sentence frequently from the locals in Sali while I prepared to go on pilgrimage to Piškera. Sali is one of 11 settlements on the island of Dugi Otok, while Piškera bay is located on an uninhabited island Jadra in the archipelago of Zadar, Croatia. The pilgrimage takes place on the last Saturday in July, every year since 1993. Most of the pilgrims are people from Sali since for almost three centuries Piškera was inhabited by their fishermen. Today the only preserved structure is the church, and the island is not owned by people from Sali anymore. During the singing that follows almost every part of this pilgrimage, the participants evoke historical, but also personal narratives and produce a unique ambient. Even I as a researcher became emotional, as I would get goosebumps and my eyes would fill with tears during the ceremony. After the mass the pilgrims started to sing spontaneously. They were festive, standing on their feet and physically changing positions depending on the voices needed. They sang without significant interruption for 4 hours. It seems to me that singing is the most important part of the pilgrimage experience and one of the main motives for going on this pilgrimage. In this presentation I argue that the sacral singing during the ceremony produces physical reactions that evoke religious sensations and provoke what Turners define as communitas. In addition, festive singing after the ceremony serves as an arena for singers’ vocal and local competition, as well as an instrument of entering the individual state of flow. It is a state where action follows action without our conscious intervention in which there is a loss of ego and self, a state that is an important component of enjoyment.
