Sažetak
Sirotković, equally versed in Marxian and Western economic thought, seemed to lead an intriguing life of sequenced “outbursts”. Intensive theoretical research had been followed by empirical verification, followed by practical policy modelling accompanied by teaching, which was then followed by economic policy implementation, and then by a return to result analysis, research, teaching and tutoring young researchers and teaching assistants. Explaining this multilayered personality’s “parallel” lives of a scientist, professor, professional economist, politician, and statesman, requires a focal point, around which all these layers “orbited”, to be identified. At the core of these layers is a highly educated researcher, at the University of Zagreb Economic Faculty, London School of Economics (LSE), University of Manchester, Berkeley University, who was associate of the Nobel Prize Winner J. Tinbergen at the United Nations Planning Commission, who scrupulously examined evidence-based findings, was measured in debates, and was open to different views. His over a hundred published research, and theoretical papers, and twenty books aside, he was an exceptional person with an unusually powerful impact on a wide circle of colleagues, co-workers, and students that he was tutoring. He was a rare personality free from the urge to cast an overwhelming professional “shadow” over his associates. He not only allowed but also encouraged their different approach and various paths to economic research. An inspiring figure of the “Economic man”, Jakov Sirotković is here for us to light the way through unpredictability and uncontrollability of creating human existence in its ever-changing technological interaction and social intercourse with natural surroundings
