Sažetak
Loess is a terrestrial clastic sediment, composed predominantly of silt-size particles, formed by the accumulation of windblown dust (PYE, 1995). Loess is usually inter-bedded with soil horizons forming loess-palaeosol successions (LPS). Thickest LPS in Croatia are found in Baranja, region bounded with two big rivers, the Danube and the Drava. Baranja is almost completely covered with Quaternary sediments (PIKIJA & ŠIKIĆ, in press ; HAASE et al, 2007). Special place within, regarding the origin, holds loess and loess derivatives. One of the most specific characteristics of loess is grain size distribution of particles. Most authors (BOGNAR, 1976 ; PÉCSI, 1990 ; SMALLEY et al., 2005 ; WRIGHT, 1995, 2001) agree that typical loess has grain- size distribution in range 20-60μm, which correlates with silt-size grains, although it can also contain certain percentage of clay and sand fraction (<25%). Five loess outcrops at Bansko brdo hill in Baranja were investigated. All of them display grain-size distribution typical for loess. Three are located on the southern slopes of the Bansko brdo hill, and other two are on the northern, steeper slopes. One of the southern loess profiles shows the sediment previously described like ‘swamp’ loess. Other two southern loess profiles are defined as typical loess. Northern loess profiles are defined as ‘slope loess’ or ‘loess derivated coluvium’, a terms previously described by several authors (BOGNAR, 1976 ; PYE, 1995). All these terms for non-typical loess can be subjected to one name: ‘loess-like sediment’. Only important difference between these sediments is in post- sedimentary conditions that defined their characteristics. Similarities include climate induced origin, source material, depositional multi-phase process and grain-size distribution.
