Sažetak
The Covid-19 pandemic affected all aspects of human activity, across the globe. The present paper re-creates the atmosphere in which Early Modern Dalmatia coped with plague epidemics that wreaked havoc in the region every several decades. The mortality rate was terrifyingly high: before the plague of 1607 Split had 4.223 inhabitants (the city+suburbs) ; after the plague only 1.045 remained (March-December). As if that was not enough, Dalmatia at the time was a wide borderland between Venetian and Ottoman possessions, with the Ottoman armies disturbingly close to the cities of Split and Šibenik, prepared to conquer either of them when an opportunity allows. Two main aspects will be analysed from the archival material and contemporary literature: 1) motion, considering all the suffering humans and germ-infested objects crossing borders, or being stuck due to countermeasures ; with the affected individuals or groups hiding, or fleeing ; 2) emotion: the emotional response will be analysed and compared to the contemporary range of emotional states related to the pandemic. The second aspect will be approached from the linguistics perspective and the perspective of the history and sociology of emotions.
