Sažetak
Water is one of the most important ways of arsenic transport and distribution in the environment. High concentrations of arsenic in drinking water result from anthropogenic contamination or naturally occurring subsurface materials. Arsenic in drinking water is a result of geological composition of soil and anthropogenic activities. As an extremely toxic and carcinogenic (skin cancer, bladder cancer) element, arsenic represents a worldwide health concern. Over 200 000 people from Eastern Croatia consume drinking water with arsenic concentration over 10 ppb, which represents the maximum contaminant level. The effective removal of arsenic from water can be achieved using following techniques: adsorption on activated alumina and granular ferric hydroxide, activated carbon process, coagulation and filtration methods by ferric and aluminium salts, membrane treatment processes (reverse osmosis and nanofiltration), ion exchange, etc. Adsorption of As(III) and As(V) from water using cationic resin (Dowex Marathon C) and two natural zeolites clinoptilolite (Donje Jelenje, Croatia) and manganese greensand (New Jersey, USA) were investigated. Natural zeolites and cationic exchange resin were saturated with Fe3+ ions from the FeCl3 solution in acetate buffer solution (pH 3.6). The Freundlich and Langmuir isotherms were calculated for arsenic solutions of different concentrations, treated at 25°C. Arsenic solutions were prepared using drinking water characteristic for Eastern Croatia region (pH 7.4 and water hardness of 260 mgL-1, CaCO3).
