Sažetak
Over the past decades plastics have become one of the largest contributors to marine pollution. Concerns have been increasing about ecotoxicological effects, not only from macro- and micro-scale plastics but also more recently from nanosized particles (1-100 nm). Moreover, understanding the consequences of nanoplastics release, particularly due to their high potential for bioaccumulation and biomagnification along marine food chains, is of growing importance. The work reported herein was focused towards the synthesis of polystyrene nanoparticles (PS NPs) and investigation of their impact on mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis. Mussels were exposed to PS NPs at concentrations of 0, 10, 50 and 100 mg L-1 for 96 h followed by a recovery period of 96 h. Oxidative stress markers, including enzymatic activity of catalase, glutathione S- transferase and acetylcholinesterase, and lipid peroxidation, were measured both after exposure and recovery period. The PS NPs have induced modulatory effects on the enzymes' activities while analysis of the same biomarkers after the recovery period showed values closer to controls. These data indicate that nanoplastics may give rise to deleterious effects in mussels after short-term exposure through generation of oxidative stress. However, the mussels also indicate an ability to reduce oxidative stress during the recovery period, likely due to activation of oxidative stress defence mechanisms and the gradual clearing of the nanoplastics by depuration.
