Sažetak
The cement industry is looking for sustainable solutions and energy-efficient binders to reduce environmental impact. Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) offer a good way to minimize CO2 emissions associated with cement production. Natural clays combined with limestone are currently one of the most promising SCMs that are available in sufficient quantities and could be immediately integrated into the existing cement production infrastructure. Even though kaolin clays possess the most pozzolanic properties, the abundant natural clays are usually composed of a mixture of various less reactive minerals that affect cement hydration. This study analyzes the effect of a large volume cement replacement by a ternary mixture of local calcined clay and limestone on the durability properties of concrete. Concrete specimens containing these mixes were tested for freeze-thaw resistance, water permeability, carbonation and compressive strength according to the European Standards (EN) in comparison with reference concrete made of Portland cement. The final result of this study is the evaluation of the possible reduction of the clinker factor by using local SCMs for the production of concrete fitted for applications in various exposure classes.
