Sažetak
Introduction: Ebstein Barr virus is the most common cause of infectious mononucleosis. It is so widespread that by the time we reach adulthood, 90 to 95% of us will be seropositive. Infectious mononucleosis is usually a benign, self- limiting disease with fever, sore throat and cervical lymphadenopathy being the most common symptoms. Rarely it can have a severe course associated with a wide range of complications involving almost any organ. Splenic infarction is a rare complication which mostly occurs in young individuals, without underlying comorbidities. Materials and methods: We present two cases of splenic infarction accompanying infectious mononucleosis caused by EBV in young adults without underlying comorbidities that were hospitalized in our department in May and September of 2021 respectively. Both patients had multiple subcapsular splenic infarctions on CT scan of the abdomen and pelvis and they both recovered completely. Conclusion: Our aim is to raise clinicians' awareness of splenic infarction in infectious mononucleosis due to Ebstein Barr virus. It is rare but potentially fatal complication with clinical presentation that can often be very subtle, and almost 30% of patients are asymptomatic. Because of that a high index of suspicion is needed
