Sažetak
Aim: To present the prevalence of genital Chlamydia trachomatis infection in a 2021 populationbased sample of emerging Croatian adults from „SERZAM2020: Dynamics of reproductive and sexual health among youth in Croatia 2005- 2020” survey. Methods: Data from the national cross-sectional bio-behavioural survey, which sampled 1.210 participants aged 18-25 years from a commercial online panel (stratified and quota- based sampling was employed), were collected from November 2021 to February 2022. Participants who completed a self-administered online questionnaire were electronically invited to collect a urine sample at home and sent it by post (using pre-paid postal envelopes). Molecular detection of Chlamydia trachomatis was performed using RT PCR test (Cobas 4800 CT/NG Test) at the Referent Center of the Ministry of Health for Diagnostics of Sexually Transmitted Diseases at the microbiological laboratory of the Andrija Stampar Teaching Institute of Public Health in Zagreb, Croatia. Collected data were post-hoc weighted for age and gender. Descriptive statistics were used for this report. Results: Of 1.210 emerging adults who participated in the behavioural part of the survey, 554 sexually active participants agreed to participate in chlamydia testing (46%). In total, 454 participants returned a sample (37.5% of the total sample ; 82% of those who accepted taking a part in the biological study arm). Weighted estimated chlamydia prevalence in the sample was 1.8% (2.5% among female and 1.0% among male participants ; 95% CI = 0.8 – 5.3 and 0.0 – 2.5, respectively). Conclusion: The results show a lower chlamydia prevalence compared to a similar national study carried out among emerging Croatian adults 2011, when 5.3% of female and 7.3% of male participants tested positive. According to the last ECDC report, the chlamydia prevalence estimates for individuals aged 15-24 years in EU/EEA Member States range from 3.0% to 4.7% for women and 0.4% to 4.7% for men. Our results are on the lower end of this range. Due to the implications of chronic asymptomatic infections for reproductive health, targeted population-based chlamydia prevalence studies are important for public health prevention, intervention efforts and screening strategies
