Sažetak
Dealing with environmental problems leads to awareness raising in the chemical, pharmaceutical and related industries. Classical methods of synthesis are widely used, but large amounts of waste are generated during the process. As a result, there is increasing pressure from the public and the profession to reduce or eliminate the amount of waste. Everything except the desired product during the production process is considered waste and it is described by the Efactor. The E-factor is defined as a kilogram of waste per kilogram of obtained product, but the impact of waste on the environment is not determined by the quantity itself but also by the nature of the waste. A higher E-factor means more waste and it also means a greater footprint on the environment. Accordingly, the term environmental quotient (EQ) is introduced, which is obtained by multiplying the E factor by an arbitrarily assigned "unfriendliness" quotient Q. Traditional E-factor represents values between simple (sE- factor - excludes water and solvents) and complete (cE factor - considers all process materials). The pharmaceutical industry has the greatest value due to the increasing complexity of molecules whose synthesis requires several steps. The E-factor seeks to reduce the principles of green chemistry, which is defined as a program for the design, development, and application of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or production of substances dangerous to human health and the environment.
