Sažetak
The properties of nanostructured materials differ from those of a single crystal or microstructured particles with the same average chemical composition. The surface to the bulk ratio of nanosized particles is extremely high compared with particles of micrometer size. Nanosized particles may be composed of one nanocrystallite or more. If more nanocrystallites are present in one nanosized particle, the plane interactions between nanocrystallites can significantly influence the properties of nanosized particles, for example, their magnetism. Nanosized particles may show various geometrical shapes such as spheres, rods, ellipsoids, whiskers, etc. There is a specific interest in the fabrication of nanotubes, nanoribbons and nanowires due to their possible applications as new smart and functional materials. The synthesis of nanosized particles usually includes a slow or forced hydrolysis of metal cations, aerosol pyrolysis, sol-gel and microemulsion preparations, the template self-assembly processes, etc. Many nanosized materials may be produced using these experimental methods, for example, metal oxides and sulfides, mixed metal oxides, metal colloides, etc. Numerous investigations were performed in the synthesis of very different metal oxide nanostructures due to their potential in the development of nanodevices, including nanoelectronics, data storage, chemical catalysis, fuel cells, gas sensors and optoelectronics. In the present work we have focused on the formation of cadmium hydroxide (beta-Cd(OH)2) and cadmium oxide (CdO) powders with the specific morphologies of their particles. The samples were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction, FT-IR spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. We are reporting on a synthesis of Cd(OH)2 and CdO nanowires by the chemical precipitation route and subsequent heating of hydroxide precursors at 300 and 600 oC. A hydrothermal treatment of the CdO precursor was also employed for comparison. The precursor contained beta-Cd(OH)2 nanowires. The hydroxide precursor transformed into a cadmium oxide phase at 300 oC, but the wire-like morphology was preseved. Nanowires produced at 300 oC showed a tendency to aggregate in the form of strings, thus providing the centers of CdO recrystallization. In addition to the nanowires, various geometrical shape of CdO particles were also observed. It was noticed that the geometrical shape of these CdO particles strongly depended on the synthesis conditions. The FT-IR spectra of hydroxide precursors showed IR bands corresponding to beta-Cd(OH)2, whereas the FT-IR spectra of samples heated at 300 and 600 oC showed the presence of CdO phase which conforms with XRD.
