Sažetak
Very large rivers are usually surveyed in different sections and at different times, and the data sets are often fragmented. However, during the 4th Joint Danube Survey phytoplankton was analysed at 26 sampling sites in the Danube River and at 10 sampling sites in tributaries. This was done monthly from April to September 2019, resulting in the first phytoplankton dataset in the Danube, followed by the same dataset for water physical and chemical parameters. A total of 682 taxa were identified, with diatoms being the dominant taxonomic group. Most of them were planktonic taxa such as Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Cyclostephanos dubius, Cyclotella meneghiniana, Skeletonema potamos or benthic such as Diatoma vulgaris. The existing hydrological and trophic conditions are clearly reflected in the composition of the phytoplankton, which exhibits spatial and temporal dynamics. The highest phytoplankton biomass was measured in the Middle reach of the Danube. Among the tributaries the Morava, Ipeľ and Rackevei-Soroksari Danube Arm were the most productive. The environmental parameters that most affected phytoplankton in the Danube were water temperature and flow conditions, while water temperature, total phosphorus, and BOD most affected phytoplankton in the tributaries. Application of functional groups and other phytoplankton traits yielded more detailed results consistent with the river continuum and nutrient loading.
