Sažetak
Biodiversity loss due to human activity has long been the subject of scientific research, with a particular focus placed on recent anthropogenic activity. Museum collections are underused in research, even though they represent a unique source of biodiversity data for a certain area over a long period of time. This study evaluates the impact of urbanization on beetles, with particular emphasis on saproxylic representatives, in the last 100 years in the City of Zagreb. This research aimed to: i) determine the beetle fauna using recent nomenclature ; ii) analyze the share of currently endangered species ; iii) georeference and compare habitat type and quantity from collection creation time with the same habitat today ; iv) provide the basis for future studies. We revised two beetle collections held in the Croatian Natural History Museum created from 1891 to 1987. We compared habitat types from 1980 with the ones from 2018, and also with locations of saproxylic beetles reported during a citizen science action using the Corine Land Cover digital database. In the museum collections, we found 3750 beetle specimens: 678 species from 52 families at 58 locations in the City of Zagreb, 26% of which show changes in land cover. Further, we found 66 nowadays endangered species of saproxylic representatives. Our results confirm intense urbanization and represent the basis for future research on urban ecology that utilizes museum collections.
