Sažetak
Introduction and Aim Ovarian tissue is particularly sensitive to aggressive gonadotoxic treatments. Nowadays, ovarian tissue cryopreservation (OTC) is the only available option for fertility preservation in oncological patients, for whom gonadotoxic therapy must begin immediately, and in prepubertal girls. The aim of the Reproductive Tissue Bank operating in University Hospital Centre Zagreb is to introduce ovarian tissue biobanking into clinical practice, which already exists in many European hospitals and fertility centres. Materials and Methods In order to introduce OTC in Croatia, a workshop on ovarian tissue banking was held in 2019 for the University Hospital Centre employees. Afterwards, transport containers for transport and cold plates for processing of ovarian tissue were validated to ensure optimal conditions for ovarian tissue banking. Results Employees are theoretically and practically trained for processing, cryopreservation and storage of ovarian tissue. Validation of transport containers for ovarian tissue showed that transport should last a maximum of 17 hours in room temperature conditions if cooling elements inside the container are beforehand cooled for 48 h at 4 ℃. Additionally, cold plates used for tissue processing should be cooled for 48 hours at -20 ° C in order to maintain proper temperature conditions for ovarian tissue processing. Conclusion The establishment of the Ovarian Tissue Bank for fertility preservation in oncological and prepubertal patients is getting closer to realization. The employees have been trained for OTC, while procured equipment and critical procedures have been validated to allow the optimal conditions for ovarian tissue transport, processing and storage.
