Sažetak
AIM: To investigate the influence of age on the relationship between personality characteristics, quality of life, and patient’s decision to accept or reject orthognathic surgery. MATERIALS AND METHOD: The sample included 108 subjects (68% female) aged 14–53 years (median 18, interquartile range 17–26, 43% adolescents), with moderate to very great need for surgery according to the Index of Orthognathic Functional Treatment Need. Six personality characteristics (neuroticism, extroversion, conscientiousness, agreeableness, openness, perfectionism, and self- esteem) and four quality of life dimensions (oral function, social interactions, awareness of deformity and facial aesthetic concern) were compared between subjects who accepted and those who refused the combined orthodontic-surgical treatment. RESULTS: Surgery was accepted by 51% of the subjects, a significantly higher proportion in adulthood than adolescence (61 vs. 37% ; p = 0.019). Among personality characteristics in adults, the decision to accept surgery is influenced by lower self-esteem and higher perfectionism, especially in the dimensions of personal standards and concerns over mistakes (p<0.05), but not influenced by neuroticism, extroversion, conscientiousness, and agreeableness or openness. In adolescents, the influence of personality traits on the decision to have surgery is not significant. The dimensions of quality of life equally influence the decision to accept surgical treatment in both adolescents and adults, namely greater concern for facial aesthetics and higher impairment of oral function (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The decision on surgical treatment of dentofacial deformity is under different influences in adolescents and adults from the level of personality traits, but it is under same influences from the level of quality of life.
