Sažetak
Environmental awareness occupies a key role in the process of the development of new renewable energy sources. This overview paper discusses the current state of technology regarding vertical axis wind turbines (VAWTs). Different types, configurations, and blade optimization techniques were considered for both commercially available VAWTs and experimental systems. The focus is given to the ways of VAWT efficiency improvement through the optimization of aerodynamic characteristics of the wind turbine, materials of blades, shapes, and dimensions of blades, and different types of wind- boosters used to improve flow over the blade. Experimental approaches in wind tunnels, under standard operating conditions, are described. A comparison of different VAWTs regarding drag type, lift type, BIAD, wind-booster type, and best practices for optimization of blades and dimensions by using computational fluid mechanic (CFD) was presented by reviewing and highlighting major novel trends in developments of VAWTs. Modern VAWTs were found to be less efficient than horizontal axis wind turbines (HAWTs), but VAWTs are more appropriate for urban areas, home-energy production, and other areas where noise, vibrations, and space are restricted. Commercially available VAWT designs were proposed as the most effective technical solutions concerning the area of application, and environmental aspects. Lessons learned from various studies and ideas for further research development are presented, which is critical for making VAWTs more efficient and accepted as a valuable sustainable energy source in urban areas.
