Sažetak
We investigated the reasons for the high cardiovascular mortality among all non-war related mortality during the three-month period (October- December 1991) of the most fierce attacks of Yugoslav army and Serbian troops on the city. All medical death notifications from Dubrovnik hospital on the people who died in that period were analyzed. We have found two peaks in overall mortality. One associated with the age of 20-30 among relating to young people who were killed in defending the city, and the other associated with the age 65 and older referring to deaths at home. Cardiovascular causes of death were leading in overall non-war related mortality. Results pointed to a great number of people who died at their homes due to the cardiovascular causes of death, i.e. acute myocardial infarction and sudden death (65.16%), congestive heart failure (23.59%) and others (11.23%). Comparison of the cardiovascular mortality compared with the same months the years before (1989-107 cardiovascular deaths ; 1990-91 deaths) and with the same months of the next year (1992-88 cardiovascular deaths) reveals a high peak in the year 1991 with the 158 cardiovascular deaths. The cardiovascular mortality in the hospital was the same during all this years. A difference was recorded in the cardiovascular mortality outside the hospital. Among the reasons for such high mortality rate, stress stands out as the leading one, with all the problems people facing in those days: no electricity, no water supply, insufficient medical supplies, and difficulties in providing emergency aid during bomb attacks.
