Sažetak
We assessed cholesterol and triglyceride levels in 27 acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients (group A) hospitalized at the Coronary Unit of Dubrovnik General Hospital during the first year of War (from October the first 1991 till September 30th 1992).The patient mean age was 61.30±11.15 years. On result assessment we used the European Atherosclerosis Society Study Group classification. The results obtained in these patients were compared with those recorded in 78 AMI patients during the year 1990, before the War (group B). Mean age was 58.4±10.24 and in 40 patients with the no cardiac cause of hospitalization at the Medical Department during 1990 (group C). The results showed elevated cholesterol concentrations in group A, without a statistically significant difference from groups B and C (p˃0.05).There were higher serum triglyceride levels ( P˂0.01) in group A with a high to moderate risk compared with the groups B and C, consequential to the specific war induced circumstances( food, smoking, alcohol). During the War, the frequency of AMI (0.62‰) was lower as compared with the non war year (1.09‰) probably because the risk groups left the town as refugees.
