Sažetak
Thirty Newcastle disease virus (NDV) strains isolated from poultry in Croatia and neighbouring countries during the last two decades were genetically characterised. Using RT-PCR of the F gene and subsequent restriction enzyme analysis or nucleotide sequencing, it was found that all pathogenic isolates from Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Vojvodina belong to genotype V. Genotype V viruses were present in Europe, including Hungary and Italy, during 1970's and early 1980's. Later they were fully replaced with other genotypes. In Hungary only genotype VI viruses were found during 1990's while in Italy several genotypes occurred. Considerable differences among genotype V viruses isolated in Croatia and neighbouring countries implicated divergent evolution of several enzootic NDV. This was enabled by infection perpetuated in village poultry in a number of micro regions. Whereas the same or similar NDV could be found in several neighbouring countries during 1980's, later subtypes were restricted to certain countries.
