Sažetak
The reclamation of the Đurđevac sands began at the end of the 19th century and included work on leveling the land, mechanical and biological stabilization of the sand shift and reforestation with Scots pine (Pinus sylverstris L.), black pine (Pinus nigra Arnold) and acacia (Robinia pseudoacacia L.). Since the period from the opening of the sands to the restoration of vegetation lasted more than 2 centuries, this could be considered as a kind of initial state of carbon (C) storage. Therefore, the main objective of the study, which has not been previously studied in this area, was to determine the effects of these forest plantations on C storage in the forest floor and soil. Sampling of forest floor and soil to a depth of 1 m was conducted at 3 sites with 5 repetitions (15 samples each) in Scots pine, black pine, and acacia plantations, as well as in control plots (CP) in the Đurđevački peski geographical-botanical reserve. The oldest 113-year-old pine plantations, second-generation acacia plantations (40 to 70 years old) and reservation area with sand flora and settled species from the surrounding agricultural and forest areas were selected. The forest plantations stored statistically significant amounts of C in the forest floor and soil compared to CP. The highest amount of C in forest floor (26.3 ± 10.5 Mg ha - 1) and soil (155.1 ± 35.5 Mg ha - 1) was stored in Scots pine plantations. Pine plantations stored twice as much C in the forest floor as acacia and three times as much as in CP, while in the soil Scots pine plantations stored three times more and black pine and acacia plantations stored twice as much C as vegetation in CP.
