Sažetak
Aim: To explore relationship between grading of smile aesthetics in adolescents (separately from the perspective of clinicians and adolescents) and reported malocclusion impacts. Additionaly, are impacts influenced by sex and age. Materials and methods: The sample consisted of 112 subjects aged 10-18 years (median 15 years), 61% females. They were adolescents referred to orthodontic consultations to five orthodontic offices in three regional centers in Croatia (Osijek, Rijeka and Split). Smile aesthetics was graded by 10-scale Aesthetic Component of the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN AC) separately by adolescents and clinicians. Malocclusion Impact Questionnaire, a condition- specific measure of oral health-related quality of life, designed to measure the impact of malocclusion on young people, was self- administrated by adolescents. Results: There was a strong correlation between clinicians and adolescents in grading smile esthetics (0.710 ; p<0.001). MIQ correlated better with clinician’s than adolescent’s assessment of altered smile aesthetics (r=0.339 ; p<0.001 and r=0.292 ; p=0.002). Predictors of malocclusion impacts in multiple linear regression were age, sex and IOTN AC assessed by adolescents. Unique contribution of sex was the highest (accounted 13.6% of variance), followed by age (5.5%) and least IOTN AC (2.8%). The whole model accounted for 24.9% of variance (p<0.001). Impacts were higher in females and increased by increase of age and impaired smile esthetics. Model with IOTN AC assessed by clinicians had higher predictive value (28.7% variance), sex remained the most important predictor, while age was the least important. Conclusion: The impact of malocclusion in adolescence are under strong influence of female sex and increase with age.
