Sažetak
Introduction: The Model of Social and Occupational Participation (MSOP) emerged as a result of research examining the lived experience of adults with physical disabilities. This model is centred around the concept of participation, which is viewed as a continuum moving from isolation (viewed as a consequence of social marginalization and occupational deprivation) to inclusion (arising from social and occupational participation), and considers the systemic, individual and environmental factors that enable and pose barriers to participation. As a model still in development, the present study examined whether the MSOP is applicable in different context and participant groups. Objectives: The goal of this research is to explore and describe the experience of everyday life of parents of boys with ADHD and to identify potential challenges and facilitators of occupational and social participation. Method: A purposeful sample included 18 parents, each of whom participated in a semi-structured, phenomenological interview. Results: An important theme to arise was that of occupational imbalance, in which participants, over-burdened by parenting challenges, reported being forced to postpone activities and responsibilities not directly related to their child (e.g., housework), had less time to participate in activities with other family members (other children or spouse), and were unable to meet their own needs for participation in occupations related to interests, rest, or socialization outside the family. Conclusion/Application: The MSOP proved to be an informative and effective tool for organizing and interpreting the data. These results prompted the addition of occupational balance as an important concept in the MSOP model.
