The paper draws on the notion that war is defined as a conflict between states and/or hierarchically constituted collectives (such as insurgents, revolutionary movements or subpopulations of states) in which at least one involved party uses military force. Furthermore, the paper draws on the notion of the just war. It gives an overview of the political though on just war from the perspective of realism, ancient conceptions of just war, classical just war theory to the developments of classical approach. It also shows the development of just war rational in the international law. The paper also highlights the contemporary debate on just war theory, starting with probably its most prominent representative, namely Michael Walzer. The paper here tackles with the justification of humanitarian intervention, the role of human rights, conflict between concepts of human rights and state sovereignty. Finally the paper deals with the lates debates on just war theory, especially with contemporary realist criticism on humanitarian interventions labelling them nothing more than basic power politics.
