Sažetak
The Roman penetration in the Eastern Adriatic in the 3rd – 1st century B.C. was preceded by the Greek colonization, and indeed Rome intervened several times to protect the Greek colonies, but also its own interests because of its expansionist ambitions aimed at gaining new territories to the east of Italy. The gradual subjugation of the Illyrian peoples had as its final goal the foundation of the colonies, and only then did the Romanization of the province begin. The archaeological data of the period from the 3rd to the 1st century B.C. are not yet such as to fill all the gaps in our knowledge of the historical process of transition from protohistory to the Roman period of the Eastern Adriatic. The relationship between Romans and natives immediately after the foundation of the colonies is not very clear from the archaeological record. There are not many sites investigated, and we are still largely based on impressions derived from fragments of knowledge, but the results of recent archaeological research are slowly changing that. There were significant differences in the relationship between Romans and the various groups of natives: the Romans did not act uniformly towards all of them, but according to the political and military situation in each subregion of the Eastern Adriatic.
