Sažetak
A piece of music might make us think of a scene (or scenery, or a film scene), an action (a group of people doing something, comparable with action in film), or a person with whom one seems to be communicating (“the music is speaking to me”, “the music is telling me something”). We have new data about how music evokes different kinds of narratives in music-therapy settings and how they relate to the musical structure—melody, harmony, rhythm, tempo and so on. The development of, and interaction between, musical elements in a piece can evoke both narratives and visual imagery. The research is relevant for film, because the music that is chosen to accompany an image is often congruent with it, helping the audience to invent or interpret a narrative. The findings are also interesting for music therapists, because they help therapists to choose the right music for a given client.
