Sažetak
Allergen immunotherapy (AIT) has been documented as useful in treatment of atopic asthmatics. Some of the authors investigated relatively small effect of AIT compared with the high efficacy of inhaled corticosteroids. The aim of the study was to evaluate the beneficial effects of AIT combined with inhaled corticosteroid therapy. AIT was administered to 42 patients with perennial mild bronchial asthma monospecific sensitive to Der p1, with positive intradermal skin test to Der p, and specific IgE (RAST classes 3 and 4). Sixteen of them were receiving topical corticosteroids (200 - 400 mg/day). Changes in the specific skin reactivity, and nonspecific and specific bronchial reactivity were evaluated before the beginning of AIT, after 6 weeks, after 6 months and 1 year later. Compared to pretreatment values, specific skin reactivity and nonspecific bronchial reactivity decreased significantly after 6 months as well as after 1 year of AIT, while specific bronchial reactivity decreased but not significantly. Patients receaving AIT and corticosteroids presented significantly better improvement in skin reactivity and nonspecific bronchial reactivity than patients receaving AIT only. These findings suggest that combining AIT with inhaled topic corticosteroids increases efficacy of the treatment, improves patient compliance, in carefully selected patients.
