Sažetak
Majority of Croatian cinema from the period up to 1945 is not lost, but still remain largely unidentified and inacessible for research (transferred after WW2 to Belgrade, the films await the return to Croatia that formally owns them, according to the 2001 agreement on succession among the former republics of Yugoslavia). The existant film scholarship on early Croatian cinema from has thus dealt with fragmentary and incomplete archive, with little idea of the size and nature of the preserved materials. Consequently, local film archivists and scholars have placed disproportioned stress on what would elsewhere be considered peripheral cinematic phenomena: film propaganda i.e. educational films of the Andrija Štampar School of Public Health, and the amateur cinema of Kinoklub Zagreb (notably amateurs Oktavijan Miletić and Maksimilijan Paspa). Established in 1928 as the oldest amateur film club in Southeast Europe, Kinoklub Zagreb is the focus of research of new generation of film archivists and scholars in Croatia, and the most recent contributions, notably those dealing with home movies and vernacular avant-garde, will be presented here.
