Sažetak
The teaching and learning of biology should be based on student observations in the natural environment, research and practical work in school, collaborative and cooperative learning, and teamwork. However, in the epidemiologically adapted environment, teachers and students are severely limited in terms of contact teaching, teamwork, and hands-on activities. In our project entitled Learning Biology in an Epidemiologically Adapted Research Environment, funded by the Croatian Science Foundation, we: (i) develop a model for learning and teaching biology under conditions of reduced interactions (model ASIO - Activities of Simulated Inquiry-based Observations in biology), (ii) set up a platform (BUBO platform - Blended Learning for Understanding Biology) with various teaching and learning materials (e.g. simple student research activities and/or video recordings of field research activities, research simulations) based on the ASIO model to support students and teachers in applying modern biology teaching strategies at different educational levels (primary, secondary, tertiary, lifelong learning programmes), and (iii) conduct an investigation of the impact of the adapted teaching and learning methods on student performance at different educational levels by observing the results of the implementation of the ASIO model and the sources of the platform BUBO. Our initial results from this project indicate that the ASIO model and the BUBO platform improve teaching effectiveness and student achievement. This is measurable through the assessment of students' conceptual understanding (consistent with student age and achievement categories) and the achievement of learning outcomes prescribed by the Croatian National Curriculum.
