Sažetak
Objective: To assess the role of religious upbringing and religious faith in sexual behavior among emerging adults. The study aimed to explore if the protective effect of religious upbring, should there be one, extends to early adulthood and delays sexual initiation irrespective of the current levels of internalized religious faith and irrespective of gender. The second step of the analysis assessed if the protective effect of religious upbringing extends after sexual debut. Design and Method: A survey on sexuality-related attitudes, knowledge, and behaviors was carried out in December 2021. Using a commercial online panel, two-stage stratified sampling by region and settlement size was used to randomly draw a national sample of Croatian emerging adults (n = 1, 210 individuals ; Mage = 22.3, SD = 2.07 ; 50.3% women). One-item measure of religious upbringing and a composite indicator of religious faith were used to assess religiosity. Sexual behavior outcomes included sexual initiation, age at sexual debut, and the number of sexual partners overall and in the past 12 months. Results: In multivariable analysis, religious upbringing – and not internalized religious faith – was related to sexual abstinence among both women and men in the sample (p = .011). In contrast, the role of religious upbringing in sexual behavior seems to wane after sexual initiation. More specifically, higher levels of internalized religious faith were related to later onset of sexual initiation (p = .032) and fewer both lifetime sexual partners (p = 0.002) and recent sexual partners (p = .023), irrespective of either religious upbringing or gender. Conclusions: Using a large national sample of emerging adults, this study’s findings suggest that different aspects of religiosity are related to different sexual behavior outcomes. The findings offer further support for the analysis of multidimensional aspects of religiosity within the same analytical and statistical models.
