Sažetak
Increasing pollution from microplastics (MPs), i.e. polymer particles smaller than 5 mm, is one of the most recent environmental concerns worldwide. A study has shown that approximately 0.4 particles of microplastics per 1 L can be detected in the environment [1]. Degradation due to weathering and aging of microplastic is inevitable despite anti-UV and anti-hydrolysis additives which lead to change in micro- and macro-scale properties [2]. Also MP may interact with the co-pollutants present in water through sorption meaning it may serve as a vector for accumulated chemicals, altering their environmental behaviour and overall toxicity. The aim of this work is to determine possible change in polypropylene (PP) structure caused by UV-aging as well as establish correlation between structural changes and adsorption of contaminants of emerging concern (CECs).
