Sažetak
Scimitar oryx is a rare antelope which was extinct in the wild and recently re-introduced into its usual habitat in North Africa. It can also be found captive in zoological gardens and conservation institutions worldwide. Due to low number of animals, pathologic findings are rarely described. A captive, 20-year old scimitar oryx, which was limping for a few days, was found dead in its enclosure, and was submitted for necropsy. The whole mammary gland was enlarged with hard consistency. On the cut surface numerous, fluid filled cysts were evident, surrounded by thick white, firm tissue. Histology revealed distended tubules with numerous papillae, supported by a fine fibrovascular stroma, extending into tubular lumina. Necroses were frequent, multifocally accompanied by purulent inflammation. The tumor was diagnosed as a tubulo-papillary carcinoma. No metastases were present grossly nor on histology. Detected pathology on other tissues was purulent bronchopneumonia of the accessory lung lobe, caseous lymphadenitis affecting the mesenteric lymph node and arthrosis of the left elbow joint and both hips. Due to low numbers, scimitar oryx present rare veterinary cases. So far, only two tumors were described, and both tumors were found in females: a uterine metastatic rhabdomyosarcoma and a uterine endometrial carcinoma. We present the first description of mammary gland carcinoma in the species, adding to the scarce knowledge about these rare animals.
