Sažetak
Tracing data published in the then contemporary printed publications (Narodni list, Naše jedinstvo, Dan, Sloboda) research was carried out on musical and theatrical life of Split during the war years (1914-18) as a contribution to achieving an integral picture of this chapter in the history of Croatian music. Similar to Split writers (Anka Uvodić, Ante Katunarić, Roko Slade Šilović) who left essays on everyday life during the war as part of their and our past, musicians too showed sensitivity towards the political and ideological context of the wartime reality. In this they witnessed not only about the compositional continuity (Antun Dobronić, Ćiril Metod Hrazdira, Josip Hatz e, Jakov Gotovac) but also about the performers who had succeeded somewhere outside of Split (Noe Matošić, Cvijeta Cindro, Marko Vušković, Armando Meneghello-Dinčić). In addition, in certain circumstances, the musical stage was often used for charitable aims in the eff ort to help to the war victims and at the same time laid the foundations for the establishment of professional music institutions and ensembles (the Split Opera). Imitating the musical performances of guest artists, local musical initiatives were developed within urban societies (Zvonimir) and as chamber music gatherings (Quartett club, 1916), thus bringing richer information and developing the receptive potential of the audiences.Taking into account that the preserved original archival material (posters, programs, photos, scores) is rather poor, and that the Split Theatre archives had been lost in a fi re, the research encompassed a much richer collection of secondary sources (in the period up to the mid-twentieth century, more than 150 newspapers were published in Split) – local chronicles and prints, in order to reconstruct the repertory and the course of more important events in compositional and performing activities. These texts considerably diff ered – from short and dry information to more extended descriptions, from amateur entries to more expert suggestions – bringing data about performers, programs and reactions of the audiences, and sometimes with broader descriptions and assessments of performed works. Although occurring much less frequently within the totality of texts, these critical reviews of musical stage and concert performances with their usually mixed programs (from solo miniatures to operatic fragments ; choral, chamber and orchestral works), as well as their echo in the public sphere, off er data for a more plastic musicological and theatrical insight.
