Sažetak
Thyroid adenocarcinomas are common in dogs, with no sex prevalence. Golden Retrievers, Beagles, Boxers and Siberian huskies have a significantly greater risk than other breeds. Thyroid carcinomas often grow rapidly, invading adjacent structures: trachea, esophagus, and larynx. Mostly they present nonmotile masses which are palpated near the larynx. This abstract presents gross and histologic findings of thyroid follicular adenocarcinoma in a 9-year old male Golden Retriever. The animal died due to gastric dilatation and volvulus. Furthermore, the necropsy revealed a 4, 7 cm (approx. 23 cm3), moderate firm, oval-shaped mass in the left thyroid area. On the cut surface multiple, jelly-like filled cysts were evident, surrounded by moderate amount of firm tissue and areas of hemorrhage and necrosis. Histologically the tumor cells were cuboidal to round, and formed follicles of variable size and shape. Mitotic activity in the tumor cells was less then 1/HPF. Grossly the liver showed multifocal, pale grey nodules, 2-3 mm in diameter. The histological finding corresponded to liver metastasis of the thyroid tumor. Other organs did not show any further gross or microscopic lesions. Metastases are found in 14% of dogs when the tumor volume is < 21cm3, and in 78% when the tumor is > 21cm3. The earliest and most frequent site of metastasis are lungs, because thyroid carcinomas tend to invade branches of the thyroid vein. The current case reveals an unusual finding of hepatic metastases in a dog with 23cm3 large tumor without any involvement of lungs.
