Sažetak
Studying requires high level proficiency in the language of schooling (Beacco et al 2010, Di Cerbo et al 2014), which implies knowledge of the common language, alongside the terminology, style and genre used in a specific school subject. The textbook is the primary source of that specific language knowledge and input, and its main purpose is knowledge transfer in a pedagogically appropriate way. Hyland (2000:107) claims that a textbook is an intersection of two types of discourse: educational and disciplinary. Accordingly, it is the intersection of the scientific, objective and impersonal discourse, and the didactic, recipient- oriented, personalized type of a discourse (cf. Schleppegrel 2018, 2007, 2004, Manoliu 2015). The critical feature of the textbook discourse - to establish a communication between the author and the reader, can be observed through the metadiscourse (Hyland 2009, 2005). The main research question in this study is does the textbook discourse change from more educational to more disciplinary between primary and secondary level of education, and how? In order to answer that question, this paper will investigate interpersonal metadiscourse in science textbooks for two different levels of elementary education in Croatia (4th grade - the final grade of primary level, and 5th grade - the first grade of secondary level). For the analysis, the Hyland's classification (1999) of interpersonal metadiscourse will be applied and two sets of textbooks will be analyzed using the program Nvivo 11. In the terms of the frequency of 2nd person verb forms, use of personal pronouns and possessives, and the consistency in its usage, the preliminary results indicate a low level of interpersonal metadiscourse, even in the textbooks for the primary level (4th grade). The obtained results will be discussed from the linguistic, as well as the educational perspective.
