Sažetak
The occurrences of &#8220 ; quartz diagenetic sediments &#8221 ; (QDS) were investigated within the Upper Albian shallow-marine carbonate sequences in Tinjan area (Central Istria).Thicknesses of several continuous layers of QDS (occasionally breaked by minor faults) generally increase (up to 2m) toward the Southern Istria (GALOVIĆ, 1991). These sediments were formed due to early-diagenetic silicification of unconsolidated carbonate deposits. The source silica-material for (see Durn et al., 2003).Tinjan area is characterised by up to15 cm thick QDS-layers, occurring within the shallowing-upward sequences composed of carbonate breccias, laminated peloidal wackestone/packstones and laminated cyanobacterial limestones.Quartz diagenetic sediments contain idiomorphic authigenic quartz crystals (type 1) or microcrystal quartz aggregates (type 2), while chert-like clusters (type 3 of QDS occurring in Istria) are subordinate. Intraformational carbonate breccias (sporadically containing black pebbles) reflect short emergence followed by silicification. Silicification also took place within the laminated peloidal wackestone/packstones and laminated cyanobacterial limestones. Different paleotopography in this part of the Adriatic Carbonate Platform during the Upper Albian caused development of thinner QDS-layers in Central Istria, compared with the thicker QDS-layers in Southern Istria. This paleotopography is the consequence of sinsedimentary tectonics and relative uplift of the Central Istria caused by gentle folding and/or during Cretaceous (Matičec et al., 1996).
