Sažetak
The period between the Croatian secession from Yugoslavia in 1991 and the year 2013, when Croatia was admitted into the European Union, is usually referred to as the period of transition. The understanding of transition that is contested in this discussion is one that involves an inflexible approach to predictability and is based on pre- conceived views of the nature of change, thus requiring reconceptualization of temporal categories. The argument presented revolves around the traumatizing potential of the political, economic, and cultural change that began to take place at an accelerated speed in the war’s aftermath. It is shown that the area of culture (i.e. literature and film, hereby discussed), much like the society as a whole, underwent the stage of ideologization and commodification during this period, yet it was also accompanied by elements of resistance to these largely negative trends. During the entire period the best of Croatian literary production appears to have arrived on the Croatian cultural scene via international backroads and is generally deeply immersed in the topic of identity and historical trauma.
