Sažetak
From January 1, 1998 till December 31, 2001, 173 human sera originating from 149 patients (some patient sera were submitted to multiple testing) were examined at the Department of Bacteriology, Croatian Veterinary Institute. Out of 149 patients, 137 were from Croatia, 11 from Slovenia, and one from Bosnia-Herzegovina. The antigen for classical agglutination was prepared by growing the reference London strain of the bacterium F. tularensis Out of 149 patients, 137 were from Croatia, 11 from Slovenia, and one from Bosnia-Herzegovina. Concerning the patients from Croatia, a positive titer of antibodies to F. tularensis was found in the sera of 25 (18.2%) patients.Fifty-six sera were referred from Zagreb, 7 of them with a positive titer of antibodies to F. tularensis. However, all these sera were referred from the University Hospital for Infectious Diseases or Dubrava University Hospital in Zagreb, where patients from all over Croatia have been treated, thus it was impossible to identify the area the respective patients had come from. Five sera with a positive titer of antibodies to F. tularensis were referred from Koprivnica, and 4 from the Sisak-Moslavina County (3 from Sisak and 1 from Topusko). It should be noted that these sera from Sisak were submitted in 1998, whereafter no other sera for agglutination for tularemia have been received from the area. In our previous study , the highest proportion of sera with a positive titer of antibodies to F. tularensis had originated from Sisak, therefore it was quite difficult to compare our present results with those recorded before. Four sera with a positive titer of antibodies to F. tularensis were submitted from Čakovec, two from Slavonski Brod, and one from Pregrada.Out of 11 sera from Slovenia, all of them referred from Murska Sobota, a positive titer of antibodies to F. tularensis was recorded in 2 sera.Only one serum was submitted from Bosnia-Herzegovina, from the area of Tomislavgrad, and was found to have a positive titer of antibodies to F. tularensis. Tularemia of rabbits has never been diagnosed in Bosnia-Herzegovina, however, the sera of three Bosnia-Herzegovina army soldiers were submitted during the previous study period (in 1995), all of them with a positive titer of antibodies to F. tularensis, whereas their history data revealed that a large number of individuals were affected. . Now, tularemia appears to occur again in the areas where it used to occur before the war, with the known foci in Posavina and Podravina, with the exception of one case from Pregrada.
