Sažetak
The frequency of Salmonella isolation and the finding of diferent serovars in poultry within the 1986 to 1991 period are described. A total of 2935 isolates belonging to 46 serovars were found. In 1986 most of the isolates occured (778), while during 1991 only 223. This shows that the number of isolates decreased over this period of time. However, the number of serovars increased. The most frequent isolates were: S. enteritidis (946 strains), S. wirchow (879 strains), and S. typhimurium (537 strains). Because of the possibility of infection in humans, this is a very significant finding. There were 167 isolates of S. gallinarum- pullorum, while other serovars occured less frequently (407 classified within 42 serovars). A comprehensive control program for Salmonella in Croatia is needed. It must comprise the control of feed, hatcheries, poultry breeding units, and slaughteries. All this would reduce the harmful concequences caused by Salmonella infection in both poultry and humans.
