Sažetak
The aim of this study was to evaluate the contribution of the right and left masseter and right and left anterior temporalis muscles in certain functional movements, which are considered symmetrical in functionally normal and balanced occlusion. The surface electromyography method was used with the bipolar electrode placement technique. Electrical activity from the left and the right anterior temporal muscles and the left and the right masseter muscles in 7 healthy subjects was recorded simultaneously with the sounds elicited from the occlusal contacts. The 8- channel PC- based EMGA-1 apparatus, specially designed and developed for the purpose of kinesyological examinations of stomatognathic system's function, was used for signal recording and evaluation. Asymmetry indices (As) were calculated for the temporalis and masseter muscles to quantify the differences between the right and left side muscles in each subject. The activity was reported also for the centric occlusion (C.O.) and isotonic (I.T.C.) and isometric (I.M.C.) contraction during the open-close-clench cycle. Most subjects have asymmetric muscular activity as asymmetry index (As) differs from 0%, and for both groups of muscles (RTA and LTA ; RM and LM) indices are about 20% or lower, with some exceptions , manly for for the masseter muscle.
