Sažetak
Athletes’ voice on the IOC athletes’ summit in 2019 was united in a request for raising awareness of the importance and improvement of mental wellbeing during and after a professional sports career. According to recent studies in the field of psychology, the majority of Olympic athletes face existential hardship in almost all life domains during and after the pursuit of an Olympic dream. However, the ongoing issue in professional sports seems to be only a part of the larger existential mosaic that has been named in the post-modern era as Nihilismus (F. Nietzsche), Geworfenheit (M. Heidegger), Sinnlosigkeit (V. Frankl), and “crisis of spirit” (D.T. Suzuki and E. Fromm). This study aims to address the question: “What does it mean to live an Olympic dream every day?". To do so, it presents philosophical standpoints and recent findings in neuroscience. Results obtained in this study show that sport has the potential to transform one’s being from nihilism into eudaemonia (unconditional happiness), both from the standpoint of ancient philosophy and contemporary neuroscience. In addition, obtained results show that there is a gap between theory and practice in achieving so, and hence it is an open question how to put these findings into practice. The contribution of this study is that it reexamines concepts related to the terms “theory” and “practice” and connects them to the terms “contemplation” and “meditation”. Moreover, it presents how these concepts can be applied by athletes and those who seek continuous personal growth in daily life. The way of integrating these concepts in daily life can be summed under the name bios theoretikos (the life of contemplation) as Aristotle noted it. Accordingly, to live an Olympic dream, i.e. to experience eudemonia is only possible in bios theoretikos.
