Sažetak
Aim: To analyze the role of salivary biomarkers in detection of TMD and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Materials and Methods: A total of 74 subjects aged 32-68 years (median 53 ; interquartile range 46-57 ; 85% females) were enrolled in the study with equal number of subjects with RA and controls without RA (N=37). Presence of temporomandibular disorders and salivary interleukins (IL) 4 and 18, and interferon gamma (IFG) were assed. Results: TMD was present in 41% of subjects with RA and 27% without RA. Arthralgia and disk displacement were the most prevalent types of TMD in people with RA, more frequent than in those without RA (16 vs. 5% and 16 vs. 11%). IFG was significantly higher in RA and in females (p≤0.049). No correlations of biomarkers with age was detected. Subjects with both RA and TMD had increased salivary IFG, IL-18 and IL-4 than healthy subjects (without RA and TMD), subjects with RA but without TMD and subjects without RA but with TMD. Differences were not statistically significant. Biomarkers were more related to RA than TMD, with tendency towards cumulative effect of TMD and RA. Conclusions: TMD is more prevalent in RA than in healthy people. Great variability in salivary biomarkers IL-4, IL- 18 and IFG is present, but imply some additional effect of TMD in RA.
