Sažetak
There is a missing link between the graduating dentist and a dentist confident and competent to independently lead family dentistry practice and provide comprehensive oral health care for patients of all age groups. That link can be successfully achieved by a structured advanced training through the specialization in family dentistry. While other dental specialties aim at achieving advanced skills in specific areas of dentistry, the family dentistry specialty aims at developing a high degree of proficiency in all aspects of dental practice integrated in a comprehensive dental treatment tailored for an individual patient. In an individual approach to a patient, a family dentistry specialist takes into account not only dental problems but also the wide aspect of family and life circumstances and provides continuous care in compliance with these circumstances. Such an approach is more satisfying for the patients and more efficient in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the diseases. A family dentistry specialist is not to replace secondary specialty care, but to recognize cases that require referral, coordinate dental treatment provided by other specialists, and integrate oral care. A family dentistry specialist must ensure effective communication with patients, members of the dental team (dental assistants, dental hygienists, laboratory technicians, receptionist) and with other colleagues, such as general dental practitioners, other dental specialists, medical doctors, and paramedic personnel.
