Sažetak
During the First World War in Split, the largest city of the region of Dalmatia, was established a humanitarian organization Ženska sekcija hrvatskog napretka (Women' s Section of Croatian Progress) which primarily cared for war orphans and hungry children. After the war ended, the organization was renamed in Narodna ženska zadruga (National Women' s Cooperative) and its members also began to illegally engage in political activism. This implies that they seeked to (in)directly assist in the realization of the idea of uniting the state of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs. At a formal level, the main goals of their engagement were to direct women into the life outside their home, or into the life of their people, into the socio-economic and political circumstances of their homeland. Otherwise, according to the then president of the organization recorded in the regional press of 1918, “a woman who does not become socially active, especially if she is culturally backward, will be a constant impediment to the progress of her people”. On the one hand, there is an indisputable humanitarian contribution of the National Women' s Cooperative in the (post) war period to assist mothers and children, widows and orphans, as well as to support the work of educational, social and charitable institutions. On the other hand, the approach of its members could be characterized as discriminatory and segregating with regard to women who had no interest in engaging in the initiatives which they implemented. In this regard, this presentation will consider the (un)intentional negative consequences of coming to the position of power of the members of the National Women' s Cooperative to their deliberation of improving the social position of the then female population in Dalmatia.
